Data center decommissioning: what auditors actually look for in your evidence package

Most decommissioning disputes are not about whether equipment left the building. They are about whether the records prove what happened to each data-bearing device after it did.

The five records that matter

• Sealed, signed transfer manifests at pickup, with counts and seal numbers
• Serialized inbound scan of every asset and every data-bearing device
• Destruction method recorded per serial, not per pallet
• Retained destruction evidence — weights, batch records and imagery where applicable
• Certificate of destruction and certificate of recycling referencing those serials

When any one of those links is recorded at pallet level, the chain of custody breaks at exactly the point an auditor tests it. Insist on serial-level reporting before the first truck is scheduled.
