A plain explanation of ITAD, how it differs from recycling, and what the process produces.
Short answer
ITAD — IT asset disposition — is the managed retirement of an organization's technology equipment. It covers collecting the equipment, destroying or sanitizing the data on it, recovering resale value where it exists, recycling the rest responsibly, and documenting every step so the organization can prove what happened to each asset.

ITAD includes data destruction and recycling, but adds asset-level accountability and value recovery. That is why organizations with audit, security or financial reporting obligations usually need ITAD rather than recycling alone.
Any organization retiring equipment that holds data or has residual value: corporate IT departments during refresh cycles, data center and colocation operators, managed service providers, organizations closing offices, and companies consolidating after mergers or cloud migrations.
